John Stott on 2 Thessalonians 1

2 Thessalonians 1:8,9  And grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

John Stott:  Those who deliberately reject Christ will be excluded from his glory.  Their terrible fate is described as both destruction and exclusion.  The implied tragedy is that human beings made by God, like God, and for God should spend eternity without God, irrevocably banished from his presence.  Instead of shining with the glory of Christ, their light will extinguished in outer darkness.
